The original Uppingham school was founded as a grammar school in
1584 by Archdeacon Robert Johnson.
In 1853 Edward Thring transformed it into one of England's foremost
schools and established a tradition of innovation which continues
today.
Since that time, it has grown and expanded and now covers 39 buildings.
They present for more diversity in architectural design than is
normally to be found in a school -a diversity which also reflects
the character of Uppingham.
With
the development of the National Curriculum and the government's
push for all children in education to have access to computers and
the internet, Uppingham School decided that they wished to upgrade
their existing systems to a more state of the art, fully networked
system.
The project was outlined briefly in documents drawn up by Uppingham
and presented to various contractors before a decision was made
on whom to award the contract.
Connectus were awarded the contract because of our experience
in installing fibre optic cables, category 5 and 5E cabling and
of course our competitive pricing.
Connectus designed and implemented a solution for Uppingham School
which covered all 39 school buildings spread over the town of Uppingham.
The scheme of work had to take into account the listed nature of
the buildings.
The solution consisted of various aspects including :
- A ducting system to connect all the remote building with a
total length of two Kilometres
- Seven Intel Gigabit Switches connected via Singlemode Fibre
Optic cabling on a Gigabit backbone.
|
- The thirty nine buildings connected via 100Mb fibre
- Thirteen hundred Category 5 Enhanced points wired in to the
buildings.
|
Statistics of interest :
The total length of fibre optic cable used was 8000m of
various cores. This is equivalent to approximately 30 miles
if all the cores are laid end to end.
The total length of Category 5 Enhanced cable used was 78000m.
This is equivalent to approximately 365 miles if all the cores
are laid end to end.
The project was estimated to take 8 months. It was finished
2 months early.

On
the hardware side, eight P3 450MHz servers running various applications
were installed. Some of the servers had multiple Intel twin network
cards that had Teaming set to give a high bandwidth access to the
network.
A large number of PC's were also supplied to replace Uppingham
Schools older machines.
The software was installed and all the schools existing databases
were migrated to the new machines.
