About Walkers Midshire Foods
Ever since they began in the 1950s, quality has been a way of
life for Samworth Brothers and is reflected in everything they
do.
Samworth Brothers have grown considerably over the years, with
a staff of over 3,000 and a turnover in excess of £250 million,
but remain a privately owned family business.
Walkers Midshire Foods, a division of Samworth Brothers, was
established in 1996 as an independent business, born out of the
success of Walkers in Leicester.
Since gaining independent status, Walkers Midshire Foods has
grown rapidly and divided into two areas of expertise :
- traditional hand linked sausages
Over the last few years the operation's success has resulted
in the trebling of its production area and the doubling of the
number of its employees.
The company's reputation is built on high class butchery skills
and on using only the finest fresh ingredients.
The Brief
In conjunction with organising the replacement software systems,
Malcolm Allen, financial controller from Midshire, and two of
his colleagues from Charnwood Foods and Bradgate Bakeries (part
of the Samworth Brothers group) were given the task of organising
a local area network for each of the 3 buildings which make up
the Walkers Midshire Foods site.
The Solution
Connectus designed and implemented a solution for Walkers Midshire
Foods which covered the 3 buildings.
The solution consisted of various aspects including the following:

- Two hundred and sixty Category 5 points wired into the Midshire
buildings
- 13000m of Category 5 UTP 4 pair solid cable
- 3 Network communication centres, hubs, fibre converters,
etc.
- The three buildings connected via 100Mb fibre and multi-core
cables for the the voice connections
In addition to the LANs installed, Midshire was also connected
to the Wide Area Network that connects the different bakeries
to the distribution centre ~ the WAN was implemented by Connectus.
The Net 5E Structured Cabling System
To provide a high quality, flexible cabling system, Connectus
installed a Category 5 structured cabling system ~ Net 5.
Net 5 is one of the most popular Category 5 structured cabling
systems. It is constantly being developed and all Net 5 Circuitry
is tested to comply with ISO 11801 Cat 5 standards and exceeds
performance requirements for Class D networks.
